ACA’s & Addictions

Adult Child of an Alcoholic (ACA):  A now grown child of (an) alcoholic parent(s).

Adult Grandchild of an Alcoholic:  A now grown child of (an) unrecovered adult child of an alcoholic.

Addiction:  “habitual psychological or physiological dependence on a substance or practice that is beyond voluntary control,” (Stedman, 2006, as referenced by Healthline http://www.healthline.com/health/addiction?utm_source=ask&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=asksearch).

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA):  touted as being the most effective treatment for addictions, focusing on abstinence from the problem substance and working the 12 Steps.

Al-anon:  A companion program to AA, created for an by the loved ones of alcoholics and focuses on working the 12 Steps of AA as well based on the premise that alcoholism is a family disease, particularly a disease of behaviors.
