The Journey Inward versus the External

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” ~Marcel Proust

“Follow your instincts,  that’s where true wisdom manifests itself.”  ~Oprah Winfrey

“There is only one journey.  Going inside yourself.” ~Rainer Maria Rilke

“The mystical journey drives us into ourselves, to a sacred flame at our center.” ~Marianne Williamson

So, I don’t know about any of you, but when I first read these, I was wondering who it was who was saying them, and I wasn’t familiar with any of them other than Oprah, but then I’m fairly confident in saying that everyone’s heard of Oprah.  Now, both Marcel Proust and Rainer Maria Rilke are or rather were French writers during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Marianne Williamson I had heard of before, having come across many of her quotes in the past (although I cannot remember any of them at the moment.  I am sure I will come across them again in the near future).  Williamson is a contemporary writer and spiritual leader.  From the little research I did, Williamson seems to be the only one of the four with spiritual ties which I find interesting.

To me, each of these quotes is very spiritual and about the journey into ourselves to some shape or degree.  But what do most of these individuals have in common:  they are writers.

We live in a rather shallow society today.  All one has to do is watch an episode of Full House and then follow up with an episode of Fuller House to see how things have changed in that respect.  The heartwarming family tv show that focused on the relationships between the family members and on life lessons has given way to crass sexual innuendos and more focus on dating and hormones than on family life and real connections.

However, writers are different in that we must be able to go into ourselves in order to do what we do.  This is directly contrary to the world around us.  Perhaps this is where these quotes are coming from.

By going into ourselves, not only are we discovering more each day about what makes up the fabric of who we are, but we are also getting closer to our God within us.  Jesus lives within us, but with our focus on the external, on self-satiation, on feeding the emptiness within ourselves, most of us run away from introspection or looking within ourselves.  What are we so afraid of?

And by going into ourselves, only then can we see the world anew and find faith in our instincts.
